Traverse Expedition

Take your expertise into the desert

Mark Hannaford is looking for scientists, researchers and specialist contributors to join the Nabataean Traverse in February–March 2027.

Journeying on foot and by camel through Jordan and Saudi Arabia, the expedition will combine field research, exploration and STEM education along an ancient Nabataean trade corridor.

From extreme medicine and human performance to ecology, archaeology, microbiology, geology and science communication, the team is bringing together expertise from across disciplines. Contributors will join an agreed expedition leg, with a minimum commitment of 10 days in the field.

WEM faculty research: women’s health on expeditions

Concerns about managing periods, accessing toilets and finding privacy can stop people from joining expeditions.

Research co-authored by WEM faculty member Laura McArthur and Jasmine Winyard explores these barriers. In their survey of 281 women aged 18–40, 11.4% reported missing an adventure tourism or expedition trip because of concerns about period management or toilet facilities.

The study highlights the need for better practical information before departure and offers a useful perspective for anyone planning expeditions or supporting participants in remote environments.

Deploy alongside your day job? Share your experience

Northeastern University researchers want to hear from clinicians, allied health professionals and trained non-clinical volunteers who respond to disasters and humanitarian emergencies while maintaining their usual civilian employment or training.

If you deploy on an event-by-event basis through a civilian response organisation, your experience could help researchers understand what motivates responders, what prevents deployment and how employer leave policies affect participation.

The anonymous survey takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Participation is voluntary, and you can skip questions or stop at any time.
