Across the profession, throughout law firms, more colleagues are viewing climate as a defining issue, shaping risk, governance, finance, litigation, and the future of client advisory work.
This month, we are celebrating the individuals leading that transition – those embedding climate awareness into legal practice, driving change within their organisations, and helping clients navigate a rapidly evolving landscape. We are delighted to launch Climate Heroes, a new recognition scheme highlighting standout leadership and innovation across the profession. Nominations open on our website on the 5th of June – World Environment Day. More information below.
For those colleagues not so convinced that climate is relevant, the LSA is proud to be supporting The National Emergency Briefing for Law, a flagship law and governance event, featuring leading scientists and experts offering cutting-edge insights on key risks and solutions to the climate and nature crisis. While there are limited seats in the room, a film will be released with abridged briefing soon after the event. Find out more below.
As the network continues to thrive, we thank all members for their valuable work. Please keep in touch – the more you share, the better we can support firms in the LSA network.
Best wishes,
Amanda Carpenter

The planet is sending us signals. We are sending one back. Assets to mark World Environment Day 2026 - 5 June |
|
UNEP’s global campaign for World Environment Day 2026 has one clear message: the planet is sending urgent signals – rising seas, raging wildfires, heatwaves, melting glaciers. But there are other signals. Signals that people are working hard to protect the planet, to raise awareness and to take action to leave a liveable planet for future generations.
"Beneath the noise, another signal is rising. Solar panels stretch across rooftops. Wind turbines line the horizon. Cities are being redesigned for people. Forests are being replanted. Climate solutions are taking root in every corner of the planet."
LSA firms are part of this movement. To mark World Environment Day on 5 June, we call on firms to highlight what they are doing to tackle the climate and nature crises. Celebrate what signals you are sending, your efforts inspire others.
LSA graphics are available via the link below, designed for sharing on your socials. Please tag us in your LinkedIn posts, so we can amplify your news. Include the official WED message – #NowForClimate.

LSA Climate Heroes
Nominations open soon! |
|
Did you know? Lawyers are secret superheroes for the planet! Sitting at the centre of every transaction, regulation and deal – lawyers' spheres of influence ripple through business, government and civil society.
We are delighted to introduce LSA Climate Heroes – a recognition scheme celebrating the lawyers and legal professionals who are going above and beyond to drive sustainability and climate-conscious thinking in their practice, in their workplace or within their communities. The campaign aims to spotlight individuals whose actions, leadership, and influence are helping create meaningful environmental impact across the profession. They can hail from any corner of your firm. LSA Climate Heroes will be invited to share their story in an interview with the LSA, exploring their work, what inspires them, and their hopes and fears for the future. They will join the LSA Climate Hero Hall of Fame and receive an LSA Climate Hero coffee mug and hamper to share with their team. Nominations open on World Environment Day, 5 June. Our panel of experts will review nominations, and we will announce the six LSA Climate Heroes for 2026 in September. |

Who Speaks for the Sea? A blog for World Oceans Day |
|
The ocean covers more than two thirds of the planet's surface. It generates roughly half the oxygen in the atmosphere, absorbs around a quarter of all CO2 emissions, and regulates temperature and weather systems across the entire globe. It is, by any measure, the largest and most consequential ecosystem on Earth. It is also, legally speaking, one of the least well protected. What can lawyers do to help?
To mark World Oceans Day on 8 June, Dr Tom Appleby, Head of Governance and Legal Affairs at the Blue Marine Foundation and Associate Professor at the University of the West of England, and Lucy Lennard, Comms Assistant for the LSA secretariat explore that topic in this blog. Please feel free to use it for internal comms on your socials, and contact us if you can offer support. |

The National Emergency Briefing for Law
|
|
The LSA is proud to support the National Emergency Briefing for Law on the Climate and Nature Crisis – a flagship law and governance event opening London Climate Action Week on 22 June.
Climate affects every area of legal practice – from finance and insurance to health, employment, infrastructure and crime. This briefing is designed precisely for those who want to understand what that means in practice. Modelled on the National Emergency Briefing for MPs, it brings world-leading scientists and experts to speak directly to lawyers about the risks ahead – tailored to what the profession and its clients face right now.
Hosted by Pinsent Masons LLP, and organised by Amanda Carpenter, CEO of Achill Legal, and Zoe Leventhal KC, Matrix Chambers.
Places at the event are fully booked – but an abridged filming of the briefing will be released soon after the event, bringing these expert insights to the whole profession. We will share the link as soon as it is available. |

Engagement Working Group Toolkit – Call for contributions |
|
The LSA Engagement Working Group is developing a new practical toolkit to support firms with internal sustainability engagement and communications. Against a backdrop of increasing green hushing and wider pushback against certain aspects of sustainability, the toolkit aims to help firms confidently embed sustainability across their businesses and engage colleagues more effectively.
The resource will include case studies, examples of best practice, guidance on running successful initiatives such as Green Week campaigns, and expert advice on using external communications and social media to strengthen colleague engagement.
The working group is currently looking for ideas, practical tips, and success stories from member firms on initiatives that have worked well internally.

Sustainability Training Platform for Legal Professionals
Call for contributors |
|
The LSA is pleased to share an exciting opportunity for members to contribute to a new Sustainability Training Platform for Legal Professionals, a collaboration between the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) and Legal Charter 1.5. The platform is being developed by legal professionals, for legal professionals, with the aim of providing practical, accessible training to support the sector in delivering transition-aligned advice. The team is currently looking for lawyers with strong energy transition expertise to contribute to a sector deep dive – a series of modules translating key energy transition issues into practical legal insight for both private practice and in-house audiences. Contributing would involve: - A 45–60 minute scoping session to help shape the structure and content
- Recording sessions once the approach is agreed
They are particularly keen to hear from those actively advising on energy transition matters who can bring a clear, applied perspective. If you are interested, or would like to suggest a colleague, please contact us at manager@legalsustainabilityalliance.com and we will pass on your details. |

Ask the Alliance – Network Support |
|
During May we have had two new queries for LSA members.
-------------
Do you have any advice for a fellow firm on international renewable energy procurement?
They are looking for guidance or recommendations on global renewable energy procurement. They currently source renewable energy for their UK office and are now looking to expand this across their international offices.
Their locations are:
- Athens
- Paris
- Madrid
- Dubai
- Saudi Arabia
- Seoul
- Shanghai
- Singapore
- Hong Kong
If you have been through this process and can offer any guidance, please email manager@legalsustainabilityalliance.com
-------------
Has anyone successfully implemented office-level sustainability or carbon reduction awards?
An LSA firm is exploring the introduction of annual awards to recognise progress towards office-level carbon reduction targets (particularly Scope 1 and 2 emissions). The aim is to raise the profile of decarbonisation goals, encourage engagement, and make sustainability initiatives more visible and rewarding.
They are currently considering a number of practical questions:
- Should awards recognise the operational teams responsible for implementation, or the wider office community?
- What types of award categories have worked well (e.g. greatest emissions reduction, cleanest data, most improved performance)?
- How can recognition be structured to fairly reward meaningful contributions without overlooking key participants or attributing success too broadly?
- What types of incentives or prizes have proven effective in encouraging genuine action and engagement?
They would welcome examples from other organisations that have implemented similar programmes, including lessons learned, successful approaches and any challenges encountered.
-------------
On behalf of the LSA, we would like to thank all those who have generously given their time to help colleagues since our last bulletin. Please don't hesitate to send in your questions for the network to the email address below and we will ask the network for their thoughts, with the option of remaining anonymous.
