Hi
Welcome to your weekly wellness tip.
Did you know that comfort eating is rarely about will power? Around 46% of us comfort eat so it's way more prevalent than you may think. And you may find there are times in your life where comfort eating increases.
It's usually a physical response driven by two things:
Cortisol & stress - Stress signals your brain to crave quick energy sugar and carbs. Blood sugar crashes - Missing key nutrients can mess with your fuel guage, making cravings impossibly strong to ignore
You are also normal if you beat yourself up after a comfort eating episode, it's very common. But this can then take you down into a stop start cycle laced with guilt, which is hard to come out of.
You can try to interrupt the cycle and regain control by following a few tips below. But please hold these lightly:
Add protein to each meal - eat a palm sized portion of protein alongside healthy fats at each meal to keep hunger and satiety hormones balanced and steady. Front load your breakfast - swap light or sugary breakfasts for high protein options to prevent mid afternoon sugar crashes. The 5 breath pause - before opening the fridge or cupboards to reach for comfort foods, take five breaths (in 4 seconds out 6 seconds). This bring you out of activation/stress and back to rest and digest. Here you will be conscious and more in control of your decision.
Be kind to yourself, small steps.
