UK Heatwave Highlights Growing Risk of Heat Illness
As temperatures rise across the UK, heat-related illness is becoming an increasingly important public health concern, not just for those working in deserts, jungles, or extreme environments.
In our latest blog, we explore the spectrum of heat illness, from heat cramps and heat exhaustion through to life-threatening heat stroke. We also break down the warning signs to watch for, practical prevention strategies, and the field-expedient T.A.C.O. (Tarp-Assisted Cooling with Oscillation) technique.

Devon-Donated Anaesthetic Machines Reach Ukraine to Support Critical Care
Ten anaesthetic machines donated by the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust have been successfully delivered to Kropyvnytski Hospital in Ukraine, helping strengthen critical care capacity for patients suffering severe trauma and infection-related complications linked to the ongoing conflict.
Coordinated by the World Extreme Medicine Fund (WEMF) alongside Somerset Aid for Ukraine and Ukrainian partner Stepan Skobenyuk, the equipment travelled more than 1,800 miles from Devon to Ukraine. Although no longer required within Devon's healthcare system, the machines remain fully functional and will now play a vital role in supporting intensive care treatment and improving healthcare resilience in the region.
The delivery forms part of a wider collaboration between UK and Ukrainian healthcare organisations, demonstrating how surplus medical equipment, international partnerships, and humanitarian action can continue to make a meaningful impact on frontline patient care.

You've Made It to the Bottom
Thanks for reading.
Have you heard about Finsehytta Film Festival 2027?
One of the things that makes the world of extreme medicine so special is the people within it. The conversations shared over dinner after a day in the field. The stories exchanged between expeditions. The lessons learned from those who have spent years operating in some of the planet's most challenging environments.
That's exactly what Finsehytta Film Festival is designed to bring together.
Set against the snowy backdrop of Norway's Hardangervidda Plateau, Finse Fest combines polar medicine, expedition skills, adventure storytelling, film, and shared experiences in one of the most iconic winter environments on Earth.
Whether you're a healthcare professional, outdoor enthusiast, student, researcher, explorer, photographer, filmmaker, or simply someone with a curiosity for cold places and big adventures, you'll find a welcoming community waiting for you.
Join us for practical learning, inspiring conversations, unforgettable films, and the opportunity to connect with people who share a passion for exploration, resilience, and the environments that challenge us.
We'd love to welcome you to Norway.
