Conference workshop technique helps clinician manage life-threatening haemorrhage

Months after attending a practical workshop at the World Extreme Medicine Conference, a clinician found themselves facing a life-threatening case of severe posterior epistaxis during an overnight shift in a rural hospital. With no ENT or surgical specialist immediately available, they recalled a technique demonstrated during the conference, successfully controlling the haemorrhage until specialist care became available.

It's a powerful reminder that the true value of hands-on education isn't measured when the session ends, but in the moments when those skills are called upon to make a difference.

Help strengthen research into Polar thigh in expedition medicine

Natalia Jaromin, an MSc Extreme Medicine student at the University of Exeter, is seeking support from the expedition community for research into Polar thigh, a cold-related condition that remains under-researched despite its occurrence in Arctic and Antarctic environments.

The study aims to improve understanding of its risk factors, clinical presentation and management, helping to build a stronger evidence base for future prevention and best practice in expedition medicine.

If you've worked or taken part in a polar expedition and have experienced, witnessed or managed a case of Polar thigh, your insights could make a valuable contribution to this important research. The survey is open internationally.

Can 200 hours of simulated altitude help prevent Acute Mountain Sickness?

Researchers have reviewed the latest evidence on pre-acclimatisation strategies and found that spending around 200 hours in simulated altitude conditions could significantly reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness during subsequent expeditions.

The review examines hypoxic tents, chambers and progressive altitude exposure, while reinforcing that pre-acclimatisation is just one part of safe expedition planning.

It's an interesting read for anyone involved in expedition, wilderness or altitude medicine.

Search and rescue teams warn new regulations could put volunteer services at risk

Volunteer search and rescue teams across Devon and Cornwall have raised concerns that proposed changes to healthcare regulation could place their future at risk.

The new legislation, introduced following recommendations from the Manchester Arena Inquiry, would require many volunteer rescue organisations to register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Teams warn that the cost, administrative burden and compliance requirements could prove unsustainable for charities that rely on volunteers, potentially affecting their ability to provide rapid medical support in remote environments.

The debate has sparked wider discussion around balancing governance with the practical realities of delivering emergency care in austere settings.
