New Spray-On Hemostatic Powder Shows Promising Results in Early Research
A newly developed spray-on hemostatic powder from researchers at KAIST is attracting attention after laboratory and animal studies demonstrated rapid bleeding control by forming an adhesive hydrogel within approximately one second. The technology was originally designed for battlefield medicine but is also being explored for trauma care, surgery, disaster response, and prehospital medicine.
The findings, published in Advanced Functional Materials, reported faster hemostasis, strong tissue adhesion, antibacterial properties, and improved wound healing compared with an existing clinical benchmark in preclinical models.
While the results are encouraging, the technology has not yet been evaluated in human clinical trials.
We'd be interested to hear from our community: could a powder-based hemostatic agent like this have a place in expedition, wilderness, prehospital or humanitarian medicine? What are your thoughts on its potential, limitations, or real-world practicality?

Damien Brown's Memoir Explores the Realities of Remote Medicine in Outback Australia
Before joining us as a guest on one of our latest World Extreme Medicine webinars, Damien Brown released his memoir, Bush Doctor: A Memoir from the Beautiful, Rugged Heart of Outback Australia.
The book draws on his experiences working in remote Australian communities and with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, offering an honest account of the clinical, ethical, and human realities of practising medicine far from conventional healthcare settings.
For anyone interested in remote, rural, or expedition medicine, it looks to be a compelling addition to the bookshelf.
