Microbes Could Help Build the First Human Homes on Mars

Scientists are exploring the use of Earth-based extremophile microbes to help construct future habitats on Mars. Recent research suggests certain bacteria could bind Martian soil into a concrete-like material while also supporting oxygen production and food systems. By combining biocementation with 3D printing, researchers hope to reduce reliance on Earth-supplied materials and take a major step toward sustainable long-term human presence on the Red Planet.

Paper: International Guidance Published on Helicopter Rescue at Very High Altitude

A review published in High Altitude Medicine & Biology outlines the first internationally endorsed recommendations for helicopter rescue operations above 3,500 metres.
Developed by the International Commission for Mountain Emergency Medicine and endorsed by the International Commission of Alpine Rescue, the guidance identifies 19 key operational, medical, and psychological factors to support safer mission planning in extreme high-altitude environments.

The recommendations aim to improve rescue capability while reducing risk for aircrew, rescuers, and patients operating in some of the most challenging conditions on Earth.
