Birmingham-based Black Space Technology is leading an international project with Birmingham City University and OUI Inc to develop an AI-enabled, smartphone-compatible digital slit lamp for use in remote and underserved settings. Supported by Innovate UK and the Eureka Network, the project aims to improve early diagnosis and reduce avoidable vision loss worldwide.

A recent peer-reviewed paper presented at the VII International Scientific and Practical Conference explores the effectiveness of tourniquets, hemostatic dressings, and improvised methods for haemorrhage control in austere environments. Drawing on analysis of 50 studies, the research highlights the life-saving impact of rapid, well-trained bleeding control and reinforces the importance of accessible haemorrhage management skills in both civilian and tactical settings.
